Abstract:
Clinical Pharmacist in intensive care in Taiwan: the past, present, and future.
In Taiwan's intensive care unit (ICU), clinical pharmacists play a crucial role, constantly evolving in the past, present, and future. In the past, clinical pharmacists in the ICU were mainly responsible for ensuring drug use's safety and efficacy and providing the medical team with the drug knowledge support required.
With the changing times, the role of clinical pharmacists in the ICU has become more diverse. We participate in drug therapy formulation and monitoring and play a coordination and communication role in the multidisciplinary team to ensure that patients receive the best drug efficacy (e.g., monitor drug-drug interaction and avoid or detect adverse drug reactions). In addition, clinical pharmacists provide medication reconciliation to ensure that patients have consistent care when they switch to different care units.
With the continuous advancement of medical technology, the role of clinical pharmacists will become more critical. We may participate in individualized drug treatment decisions, tailoring the most suitable drug regimen based on the patient's physiological state and medical history. In the future, clinical pharmacists may also use data analysis and artificial intelligence to predict a patient's response to a specific drug and further improve the effect of drug treatment.
