Abstract:
Almost all trauma surgeons know ATLS very well. However, if in the disaster or austere environment, what will we do? Still ATLS?
The ability to provide quality trauma care in any resource-constrained environment, including areas of conflict, disaster, and other austere settings, may be highly variable.
Objective
1. Understand under which circumstance to convert to minimally acceptable care.
2. Describe tools for effective mass-casualty care.
3. List the priorities for care of an individual in a mass-casualty situation.
4. Discuss challenges for mass-casualty care.
5. Identify challenges of providing trauma care in austere, environments.
Case Scenario #1
• An explosion in an illegal factory in rural area, unknown cause. Multiple casualties.
• You are the only surgeon in he area, just in the market one block away.
