Abstract:
Inappropriate management of pain, agitation and delirium in critically ill patients leads to an aggravation of the patients’ outcome and increment of medical expenses.
Delirium is known that occurs in 60-80% of mechanically ventilated adult patients, however, many of them are underdiagnosed. Delirium can increase mechanical ventilation duration and ICU stay, which result in short-term and long-term cognitive dysfunction after ICU discharge.
Since Society of Critical Care Medicine issue its first guideline about sedatives in 2002, many versions of sedation and pain management guideline have been published in different countries.
We, hereby, review the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine PADIS guideline, which is published in 2021, and compare it with the guidelines of other countries. The current practice in Korea will be reviewed, too.
